Creating a Document Type
Find out how to create a Document Type to track different documents, permits or certifications in your account.
Document Types help you organize the different types of documents, certifications, permits, and other items you track in Expiration Reminder. An Expiration Reminder account has no limit on the amount of Document Types that can be created.
For example, if you're tracking employee certifications, you might create Document Types for:
- Nurse Certification
- First Aid Certification
- Paramedic Certification
If you're tracking permits, you might create:
- Fire Permit
- Sprinkler Permit
- Elevator Permit
- Building Permit
Once a Document Type is created, you can use it when creating expiration items. Document Types can also determine which notification settings are available for those items.
Creating a Document Type
To create a new Document Type:
- Click Expirations on the left-hand side.
- Select Document Types.

3. Click + Add Document Type in the top-right corner.
4. Enter the Name of your Document Type. The name is the only required field.
5. Optionally, add a Description or adjust the Reminder Notifications.
6. Scroll down and click Save.

By default, reminders are sent 30 days, 15 days, 5 days, and 1 day before the expiration date when creating a Document Type. This default applies to all Document Types unless you change it.
